10 personal trainer and strength certifications side by side: whether the exam is NCCA-accredited, what it costs to get certified, exam and retake fees, format, published pass rates, prerequisites and what it takes to keep the credential. Every figure comes from the certifying organization's own pages or documents, with source links on each row. Where an organization doesn't publish a figure, the table says Not listed.

ACE: the open-book "ACE Personal Training Certificate" exam in the study programs is not NCCA-accredited. The accredited ACE Certified Personal Trainer exam is a separate proctored exam: $99 as an add-on with a study program ($499 exam-only). ACE exam options ↗
ISSA: ISSA's own open-book online final exam is not NCCA-accredited; the accredited path is the NCCPT-CPT exam (an ISSA subsidiary). ISSA lists a $79 Prometric delivery fee for it on top of the course price. NCCPT exam page ↗
AFAA: AFAA's own pages are unclear. Its terms (shared with NASM) list only NASM-CPT as accredited, while the PFT product page still carries an older note saying the online test is NCCA-accredited. The table lists AFAA PFT as not NCCA-accredited. AFAA terms ↗ · PFT page ↗

Prices checked Nov 2, 2026 on each organization's pages. Several organizations show list prices struck through with ongoing discounts, so the price you see may differ; the cheapest and typical columns name the package each price belongs to. Pass rates come from different years and different exams with different candidate pools, so they don't measure the quality of a certification. "Not listed" means the figure wasn't published, or wasn't captured, on the official pages.

FAQ

Which of these certifications are NCCA-accredited?

The organizations' own pages list NASM-CPT, ACE CPT, ISSA CPT (NCCPT), NSCA-CPT, CSCS, ACSM-EP, NCSF CPT, NFPT CPT, NESTA PFT as NCCA-accredited. AFAA PFT is listed as not accredited because its own pages conflict. For ACE and ISSA, only the separate proctored exam is accredited, not the open-book exam in the default study package.

Does the cheapest package include the accredited exam?

Not always. ACE's cheapest listed package is $593.40, and the accredited exam is a $99 add-on. ISSA's is $868 plus a $79 Prometric fee for the NCCPT exam. NASM's cheapest listed package, $999, includes the accredited exam. NSCA-CPT, CSCS, ACSM-EP, NCSF CPT, NFPT CPT, NESTA PFT list an exam-only price.

Which certifications require a degree?

CSCS: Bachelor's degree (any field through 2029; from Jan 1, 2030 U.S. candidates need a CASCE-accredited degree) + current CPR/AED. ACSM-EP: Bachelor's in exercise science/physiology/kinesiology (or final semester), adult CPR/AED with live skills check; First Aid from 2027. The others list CPR/AED and, for some, a high school diploma; see the Prerequisites column.

How often do you have to recertify?

Every year: NFPT CPT. Every 2 years: NASM-CPT, ACE CPT, ISSA CPT (NCCPT), NCSF CPT, AFAA PFT. Every 3 years: NSCA-CPT, CSCS, ACSM-EP. Every 4 years: NESTA PFT. NFPT notes: 2.0 CECs per year from year two; from Jan 1, 2027 moves to 2-year cycle with 4.0 CECs. CEU counts and fees are in the Recertification column.
