Personal trainer career path: floor trainer to fitness director
Four common stages: floor trainer, online coach, studio owner and fitness director. For each one: the certifications, the skills, and income only where a reliable published source exists. Where we found none, we say so instead of guessing.

The BLS figures cover fitness trainers and instructors as one occupation (SOC 39-9031). They don't separate online coaching, studio ownership or director roles, so we don't stretch them to those stages. Skills lists are our own view from coaching, not survey findings.
1. Floor trainer
Coaching members and clients in person at a gym, club or studio, usually as an employee.
Certifications
- An NCCA-accredited personal trainer certification. The certifications page compares NASM-CPT, ACE CPT, ISSA (NCCPT), NSCA-CPT, ACSM and more.
- Current CPR/AED.
- Employers usually prefer certified trainers, and personal trainers usually need a certification before working with clients[1].
- Most also need CPR, first aid and AED certification[1].
Skills to build (our view)
- Safe exercise selection, coaching cues and progressions
- Assessing a new client and setting goals
- Selling and renewing sessions on the floor
- Keeping session notes and a schedule
Income (BLS, employees in the occupation): median $47,160 a year, or $22.67 an hour, in May 2025[1]. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,800 and the highest 10 percent more than $83,100[1].
2. Online coach
Programming and check-ins delivered through a coaching app, often alongside in-person clients.
Certifications
- The same personal trainer certification and CPR/AED as on the floor.
- Insurance that covers online instruction (check the policy wording; some providers on the insurance page say they cover online instruction).
Skills to build (our view)
- Writing programs clients run without you there
- Video form review and written feedback
- Running a coaching app and payments
- Marketing: content, email list and referrals
Income: No reliable source We found no reliable published income figure for online coaches. BLS reports fitness trainers and instructors as one occupation and doesn't separate out online coaching. So we don't give a number.
3. Studio owner
Running your own space: rent, equipment, staff or contractors, memberships and packages.
Certifications
- A personal trainer certification and CPR/AED for anyone who coaches.
- Business registration, liability insurance and any local permits; requirements depend on where you operate.
Skills to build (our view)
- Pricing, cash flow and break-even planning
- Hiring, scheduling and paying coaches
- Lease, equipment and safety basics
- Local marketing and member retention
Income: No reliable source We found no reliable published income figure for fitness studio owners, and we didn't find a BLS figure for them. Owner earnings depend on rent, member count and costs, so we don't give a number. The break-even calculator can model your own numbers.
4. Fitness director
Managing the fitness department of a club, gym, hospital or university facility: trainers, programming and revenue.
Certifications
- Usually a personal trainer certification plus years of coaching; some employers ask for a degree in exercise science or a related field. Requirements vary by employer, so read each job posting.
Skills to build (our view)
- Hiring, training and scheduling trainers
- Department budgets and personal training revenue
- Programming standards and member safety
- Reporting to general managers or owners
Income: No reliable source We found no reliable published income figure specific to fitness directors. We didn't find a BLS occupation that matches the job; the closest manager category we saw (Entertainment and Recreation Managers, Except Gambling) isn't specific to fitness, so we don't use its figures.
